Caldwell Journal | Teachers win Bright Ideas grant from Blue Ridge Electric

LENOIR, NC (November 9, 2015)…Exciting, hands-on learning projects are coming to local classrooms, thanks to $4,700 in Bright Ideas grants awarded today by Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation to local educators during a luncheon at Blue Ridge Electric’s corporate office.

Bright Ideas is an academic grants program sponsored by Blue Ridge Electric in conjunction with North Carolina Electric Membership Corporation and its 26 other member electric cooperatives. Bright Ideas grants help fund innovative scholastic projects that go beyond available school funding.

Caldwell County grant winners are:

Jim Shulstad of Valmead Elementary School for “Hands on Sound.” This grant of $277 will be used to help Valmead students experience more through the NC Essential Standards for music curriculum.

Chad Davis of Caldwell County Gateway School for “Gateway Gardens.” This $800 grant will be used to build relationships with students and the community by learning about plant-human correlation, teaching about economic sustainability, and establishing a sense of belonging between the school, teachers, students, parents and the community.

Mitchell Wright of Caldwell County Early College High School for “The Common Good Action Project.” This $1,300 grant will be used for this community empowering goal of working with high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors to explore the power of local government, press, and private charities to solve problems on the street level of Caldwell County.

Kim Burns of Caldwell County Early College High School for “Generations Connect.” This $1,100 grant will be used to pair up tech savvy youth with older adults to share their knowledge about technology. . .
