For NC New schools, quality education includes a fundamentally different approach to teaching and learning in mathematics, science and humanities where authentic student engagement is central to the learning process. In our work with the initial cohort of STEM schools, NC New Schools researched and identified exemplary mathematics and science programs that would support Powerful Teaching and Learning in each content area. These programs were developed by university-based projects in collaboration with secondary school teachers, mathematicians and scientists, and university math and science educators with funding from the National Science Foundation. The resulting programs were field-tested throughout the country in urban, suburban and rural schools.
NC New Schools provides professional development to support implementation of a number of these programs, including Core-Plus Mathematics and Modeling Instruction in Science. The professional development is best described as immersive or experiential – teachers will experience engaging, inquiry-based investigations that model high leverage instructional strategies and provide a solid foundation in disciplinary core content aligned to the Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards within the context of real issues.
