GREENSBORO — Cooler temperatures are here, but many of the neediest Greensboro residents will have gloves, hats and blankets thanks to some local students.
Students and staff from the Middle College at GTCC-Greensboro spent a night outside from Nov. 6-7 to raise awareness about homelessness and to collect donations. The event, originally planned for October, was postponed because of heavy rain.
People were invited to drive by and drop off nonperishable donations.
The group collected 1,979 items, including toiletries, which they assembled into more than 689 care packages for Triad residents who are homeless, according to a news release from Guilford County Schools. That’s more than five times as items and almost twice as many care packages as middle college students collected at the inaugural event last year.
“We are so proud of our students and all they accomplished this year,” social studies teacher Jacqueline Sturdivant said in the news release. “The students really took on this project as their own and made it a huge success.”
The students already have another service project planned. They will collect and distribute care packages to women living in the Family Shelter at the YWCA, the news release stated.
Now the students are looking toward their next project, collecting and distributing care packages to women living in the Family Shelter at the YWCA to help give them a happy holiday season.
The Early/Middle College at GTCC Greensboro is an NC New Schools/Breakthrough Learning network school.
