Industry Innovation Councils Link Learning and Business

Partnerships between business and education are crucial for ensuring that students graduate with the tools and knowledge needed to succeed in a 21st century economy.  That’s why NC New Schools works to connect business leaders with schools and districts across the state, particularly in schools focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

On Nov. 20, North Carolina New Schools’ Aerospace & Advanced Manufacturing Industry Innovation Council met at LORD Corporation in Cary. The group consists of 22 industry professionals who partner with a network of STEM-focused schools in North Carolina. Council members focused on solidifying action steps for the coming year and creating “driving questions” around real industry problems for use in the classroom.

Council co-chairs Dawn Braswell, training specialist at Siemens Energy, and Michael Ray, managing director at SE Engineering Experis, facilitated the meeting and shared their expertise in creating innovative business and school partnerships. Doug Lorenz, president of Global Industry Automotive and Industrial Assembly at LORD Corporation, delivered a company overview and arranged for a facility tour.

The participants viewed cutting-edge electronic and composites technologies relating to helicopter vibration reduction, airplane lightning protection and military vehicle suspensions. The meeting included a brainstorming session on meeting the council’s goals of aligning members with specific district or school advisory boards, coordinating annual teacher externships and developing industry-linked learning projects for students.
