Monday July 8 through Wednesday July 10:
Three-day PBL 101 Workshop (Elementary or Grades 6-12). Registration is $750 for three days of training. This onsite workshop engages participants in learning the principles for designing, assessing and managing standards-focused projects as well as using performance assessments to judge the relevant work generated by 21st Century learners. Through a combination of direct instruction, video analysis and hands-on collaborative work, participants have the opportunity to plan, design and receive peer feedback on an engaging and rigorous project using the Buck Institute for Education model and tools. Every participant receives a free copy of our PBL 101 Workbook and the PBL Handbook, which include rubrics, planning forms, activities, readings, etc.
Thursday July 11:
One-day PBL 201: Advanced Practices workshops. Registration is $250 for one day of training. These workshops are designed as follow-ups for educators who have taken our PBL 101 workshop and had an opportunity to implement their project or other PBL teachers seeking a deep-dive in one of these areas:
Common Core Based Rubrics (35 participants): The Common Core standards are the "what" and PBL is the "how" which leads to an important question, "How do I assess students' mastery of the standards in my project?" Part of the answer is to keep using traditional assessment tools, but you may also need to use performance assessment strategies. Learn how to align Common Core Standards with individual and team products in your project and write rubrics aligned to the Common Core Standards for major products and performances. We will look at rubric examples and evaluate rubric quality using a "rubric for rubrics." Participants will walk out of the session with a rubric designed for their project.
Differentiated Instruction (35 participants): Project Based Learning gives students voice and choice to take charge of their learning. PBL is a natural structure for differentiating learning to meet the needs of all students. Explore the key areas in PBL for effective support of diverse learners: culminating products and scaffolding in the Teaching and Learning Guide. Bring your projects and project ideas. In collaborative activities, reflect on PBL practices to develop differentiated supports that will strengthen student voice and choice for higher academic achievement for all students.
Hotel Information: For participants needing overnight rooms, we have a group of rooms blocked at the Hampton Inn & Suites Durham/North 1-85. When calling to make reservations, ask for the NC New Schools block.
